Housing Needs

Getting a Home from the Council

Properties are usually let to the people with the most number of points. Wherever possible we try to take account of the areas where people want to live but in some parts of the district and for some property sizes, we only rarely get vacancies.

  • Choice Based Lettings / Kent Homechoice
Rather than homes being allocated by the council, Choice Based Lettings allows tenants and prospective tenants to bid for the empty homes they are interested in.
  • Homelessness
What you should do if you are homeless, or might become homeless including advice on what to do if you are having problems paying your mortgage.
  • Housing register
The Council will consider every application for housing providing it is made in accordance with the Council's Allocation Policy.
  • Points Scheme
Empty Council homes are let to those in the greatest housing need. The degree of housing need is assessed by using a poitns scheme
  • Transferring tenants
Homes are let either to people of families on the Housing Register (sometimes called the waiting list), to households who are homeless or to existing tenants who need a transfer
  • Waiting Times
How long you may have to wait to get a home
  • Choice of housing accommodation
Applicants have a choice of property types and areas they would like to consider and have the opportunity to express preferences about the housing accommodation to be allocated to them.
  • Forms
Applications for housing and housing transfers
  • Mobility Exchange Schemes
Information available from the Direct.gov website
  • Housing Providers
Housing Associations and Registered Social Landlords
  • Directory of Housing Needs Services
Produced in partnership with Canterbury City Council and Thanet District Council, the Directory of Housing Needs Services lists housing-related services that are available in East Kent.
