Parks & Open Spaces
The Council owns and manages many areas of parks and green
spaces. Improvements have been made to many sites in recent years,
for example, the provision of a network of multi-use games areas
(MUGAs) across the district. Most of these provide facilities for
basketball and football but some also have specialist equipment for
skateboarding/in line skating. The sites at Victoria Park and
Buckland have the advantage of being floodlit.
The Council has been working to improve many of its key
landscaped areas to enhance the appearance of the district.
Attention has been concentrated at Marke Wood, Kearsney Abbey,
Russell Gardens and Connaught Park which have all benefited from
substantial improvements. Major works have been undertaken to the
ornamental lake at Russell Gardens and the moat along the town
walls in Sandwich was dredged with the works part funded by
Sandwich Town Council.
Other work has been supported by initiatives such as the
partnership with Deal Town Council and Walmer Parish Council for
the Britain in Bloom competition which has been a catalyst for
increasing public interest in the value of quality landscaping in
the district. Partnership with local businesses funded improvements
along the Folkestone Road and the sponsored roundabout project,
which has made a real difference to a number of sites across the
District but especially on the A20 trunk road.
All sites have free entry and are open 24/7, however there is a
charge for pitch and court bookings.

Parks and Open Spaces Strategy
The value of parks and open spaces has long been recognised for
promoting healthy living such as walking, cycling, informal
recreation social interaction, education, and supporting
biodiversity.
To ensure the parks and open spaces are managed effectively,
Dover District Council commissioned the ‘Dover District Parks &
Open Spaces Strategy’, which was completed in May 2008.
The strategy aims to focus on the requirements of local people,
ensure the value of capital investment can be maximised, and
implement improvements to local neighbourhoods.
